I’m Engaged!

Hey girl hey!

Happy September! Cheers to new goals, habits and things!

Soooo, I’ve been gone for good reasons this time. However, if you follow me on Instagram you would know this already. Girl, I got engaged! Yes, the boyfriend of my dreams got on one knee and proposed to little ol’ me.

A lot of people asked, “did you know it was coming?”

Yes, I did know. Last Spring, we started to take premarital classes at our church so it was evident that we both wanted to get married to each other at that point. By the way, I totally recommend premarital courses to everyone that wants to get married! Prior to premarital counseling, we’ve been together for about three years. We knew a lot about each other, but premarital counseling revealed so much more that we didn’t touch upon in our relationship.

Soooooo, I know you’re probably wondering “how did it happen?”

My boyfriend (now fiancé haha) and I planned to go to Fort Lauderdale, Florida for our last vacation. We’re both teachers so for our last summer vacay we decided to go for a bit of fun, relaxation and to refill spiritually. I signed up to go to the Pinky Promise conference which took place during the same time I was down there. By the way, I loooved Fort Lauderdale y’all! Call me boring, but there’s a time to go to Miami and there’s a time to just chill. That’s all I wanted, not a turn up haha!

Anyways, the day he proposed (July 25th) we had such a chill morning. I wore ZERO makeup (not even brows haha). We went to go get breakfast and then we both worked out at the gym. Shortly after, we went to the beach and just had a chill time. Jose (my fiancé), kept saying he had to call his co-worker to discuss school work so he stepped away to call. I found that to be odd because summer classes were done, but I let it slide. Shortly after the beach and the phone call,  it started to rain and we ended up just watching Black Love Doc. BEST SHOW EVER! I love the transparency and realness.

Anyways, Jose was going in the day before about having a date night the day of the proposal.

He wanted to have a romantic walk on the beach, but plans got cancelled due to the rain. WHOMP WHOMP! Pinky Promise was having Worship Night the same night, so I assumed that date night would be cancelled. Assuming this, I turned to Jose and said “I’m about to go to the worship night”. HE REFUSED Y’ALL! He never refuses worship and rarely goes in about a date night. He was like “No, you said you’re going to spend time with me today!”. Haha! Still, I didn’t think anything of it. He changed plans from walking on the beach to going to this bomb steak restaurant called Steak 954 located in the W Hotel. So good! After a short wardrobe crisis (because I under packed), we left to go to the restaurant. Thank God, I found a decent outfit.

We arrived to the restaurant and Jose seemed STRESSED!

I saw him whisper “oh my gosh” to himself. I kept asking him “what’s wrong?” and he kept saying “Nothing.”I got louder and louder because It was clear that he was hiding something! He then left the table out of nowhere. Guys, I thought he was sick haha. The waitress came over to take our order, but I said hold off on food because I think we have to go. He returned to the table and then said “ His chest hurts”. It was a bold face lie! He wanted me to empathize with him so I can get off his back. He then got up again! During this whole time he is communicating with the photographer and restaurant about the proposal. In my mind, I’m thinking he’s sick. He returned to the table and I start to express my love for him and how important it is to let me know things (especially because of his medical history). Tears even fell! Shortly after, the tone at the table lightened up and I showed him a video on Instagram of someone proposing to his girlfriend and the girlfriend said no. Probably the worst thing I could show him. I know! But the conversation kept flowing as normal.

Our waitress finally returned to the table with “complimentary champagne”.

She said “ I know that your day has not been going as planned so take this, go out front and just enjoy the beach”. Girl, she had me sold before we even ate the food! Mind you, this was all a setup to get me outside so he can propose. We get outside and Jose says “Emari, we’ve been together for a while. I put up with your stuff and you put up with mine. I can’t wait to spend my life with you.” My smart self said “well, I’m still waiting”. THEE PERFECT SEGUE.

He then took out the ring and asked “Will you marry me?”.

Of course, I said yes! I am head over hills and cannot wait to marry the love of my life. This year will be hectic and full of planning, but I’m sure it’s worth it.

Hey y’all 💕💐! It’s May…also Mental Hea Hey y’all 💕💐! It’s May…also Mental Health Awareness Month!

It has definitely taken some time for me to find out what "self care" truly means to me. While wellness is a trend on social media, I really hope that we are really taking care of ourselves when needed. I love to see black women taking care of themselves and moving with ease.

- * Healthy Habits in my Routine -
1. Journaling: Journaling can be so freeing. I use my journals to stamp things during therapy, during Bible study or just to mind dump.
2. Eating Balanced Meals: I feel like there isn't enough importance on how vital eating nutritious foods are. Trust, I love my feel good foods, but at my big age I know food plays a part in so many ways. It’s about balance.
3. Movement: The positive effects of moving my body has made my healing journey so much more intimate with myself. Movement is truly my second form of therapy.
4. Rest: I used to feel guilty resting from anything, but sometimes it’s totally needed. Step away to prioritize the important things: relationship with god, making those appointments (so important), having those conversations, feeling your emotions (still working on this) and just diving into real community vs. social media. Our work/productivity is not our worth. It’s okay to step away.
5. Unlearning and Learning: Whether it’s gods pruning process or realizations, unlearning and learning is important. It’s truly the only way to grow beyond what you’ve learned/know. Address the uncomfortable habits, feel the uncomfortable feelings, educate yourself on the things that matter. It will be life changing for you and your lineage.

As I get older, I become more intentional about my As I get older, I become more intentional about my choices and what to prioritize. One being, my health. Consistency is important, but for the right reasons. Here’s what helps me be consistent:

💪🏾 I no longer have a specific body goal. I focus on strength (physical and mental). I always say the gym is my second form of therapy lol.

💪🏾 All movement counts. All workouts don’t have to be super high impact, but enjoyable.

💪🏾 Involving my husband. We’ve both been in the gym and I love that we can both share things about our journey. Helps us bond.

💪🏾 Showing myself grace. All days won’t be perfect, but showing up matters

💪🏾 Don’t use the scale as a monitor. I don’t monitor my weight at all because getting stronger also leads to muscle gain. The scale may go up, but you appear more toned. This may trigger you and lead to you giving up. Don’t pay any mind to it.

So this first impressions video was taken over a m So this first impressions video was taken over a month ago, but I’ve been loving the @cosrx Snail Essence. I’m usually hesitant when trying new skincare products, but after doing research I wanted to try it!

First off, what is a Essence?
An Essence is a water-based skin care product that contains a high content of active ingredients. These actives hydrate, protect, and boost the overall health of skin.

An Essence should be applied to damp skin. When essence is applied to clean skin after using a cleanser and toner, it helps restore hydration to the skin cells. When it’s applied before serums and moisturizers, it helps the skin better absorb these products.

Either way is fine. I love this Essence because it has helped with hydration, skin texture and hyperpigmentation. I love it! Have you tried this product?

Even though I don’t believe pain is a prerequisite for growth, there are times where God uses struggles and hardships to correct us. Brings us out of something we don’t have no business in 😂. And, there are times when we're simply being given an opportunity for growth—being "trained" into a deeper faith.

It sucks sometime, but it’s all about perspective.

in my fitness girl era - saying no, setting bounda in my fitness girl era - saying no, setting boundaries, prioritizing my goals etc.
Things that have helped me be consistent:

✨Being okay with missing out: Honestly, no fomo here. At all.
✨ Recognizing Distractions: Putting your head down and worrying about your journey is the most peaceful thing. Build that awareness of controllable things that has your time + attention.
✨ Set realistic and sustainable goals: If you cannot make it to workout 5 days a week, do 2. Work your way up.
✨ Showing myself GRACE: progress over perfection. Showing up to do things that will evolve me physically and mentally is enough. Progress.
✨ Celebrating yourself: Self validation is very important. Get good with celebrating your wins. Value yourself over the outside accolades.
✨Getting good with systems: My therapist always says, if something goes wrong don’t criticize yourself. Always check your systems. Making lifestyle changes is all about systems (taking vitamins, fitness, meal prepping, grocery list, etc). How do you seamlessly make that apart of your lifestyle and cut out the barriers?
✨ Balanced Living: Still doing/eating things that I enjoy, but having balance is key.
